Hallway Conversation
Here is a hallway conversation I had recently that sums up a difference in approach between Development and Product Management:
Paul: “Mr. Executive, did you see the latest updates to the MRD for the new product?”
Exec: “Yes, and you keep adding these requirements that are going to add at least $30 to the BOM. You need to keep in mind that there are three variables we can play with: cost, time, and quality.”
Paul: “How are we even going to have the conversation without all the requirements on the table?”
Don’t forget: Development sees each requirement as a unit of work first, and fulfilling a user’s need second. They will push to minimize their units of work. Keep the user #1 in your mind and have data to back up each requirement to withstand this pushback from Development!
